Peace!

I had a spiritual teacher who one year gave us the assignment to establish peace within.  He said, "pray to establish peace within - a deeply settled calm, undisturbed and undisturbable quiet of thought."  Just saying those words helps me gain a sense of peace within.   It conveys a sense of the indwelling stillness and power of true peace that can awaken from the depths of our soul and reverbrate through every area of our lives.

Practicing peace means being at peace with our fellow man.  But sometimes, before we can reliably establish that peace, we need to rid ourselves of fear and concern.  In the Bible, when apparently surrounded by an enemy in great numbers, the prophet Elisha prayed for his servant, "Lord, I pray thee, open his eyes, that he may see."  (II Kings 6:17)  And his servant's eyes were opened, and he saw chariots of fire round about them, protecting them.  In seeking peace, we too may need to begin by letting our eyes be opened to the supersensible spiritual facts of God's glorious power present at hand.

Before we open our eyes to the glories of the hosts of heaven, at hand, it sometimes looks like there is an urgent need to do something.  That sense of urgency is a fleeting phase of fear, and it isn't based on spiritual reality.  Spiritual perspective shows that the only things we really need to do urgently are to turn to God, with happy trust in His disposition of events, and to actively love all mankind as our self.  Then we will find the peace that passeth understanding, and we can increasingly share that peace with our world.

"And though the Lord give you the bread of adversity, and the water of affliction, yet shall not thy teachers be removed into a corner any more, but thine eyes shall see thy teachers: And thine ears shall hear a word behind thee, saying, This is the way, walk ye it it, when ye turn to the right hand, and when ye turn to the left."  (Isa 30:20-21)

"Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee."  (Isa 26:3)
